What “100% Synthetic” Really Means — and How to Read an Oil Label

What “100% Synthetic” Really Means — and How to Read an Oil Label

When you pick up a bottle of engine oil, you will see all kinds of terms on the label: "100% synthetic", "synthetic based", "synthetic technology", "blend". They sound similar — but they do not all mean the same thing. Here is a simple guide so you can read any oil label with confidence.

Every oil starts with a base

Each engine oil is built on a base oil, which the industry sorts into five groups (Group I to Group V). For drivers, the useful distinction is:

  • Group III — highly refined mineral oil. A good everyday oil, often described as "synthetic" or "synthetic technology".
  • Group IV (PAO) and Group V (esters) — fully engineered synthetic molecules. This is what a true "100% synthetic" oil is built from.

What the label terms usually mean

  • 100% synthetic — based on genuine synthetic bases (PAO/ester).
  • Synthetic based / synthetic technology — usually built largely on highly refined mineral base oil.
  • Semi-synthetic / blend — a mix of mineral and synthetic bases.

None of these are "bad" — they suit different needs, engines and budgets. The important thing is simply knowing what you are buying.

Why 100% synthetic can be worth it

Genuine synthetic bases (PAO/ester) offer real advantages, especially for modern and high-performance engines:

  • Strong stability at high temperatures and under load
  • Excellent cold-start flow, protecting the engine in the first seconds
  • High resistance to oxidation, so the oil keeps performing for longer
  • Consistent protection against wear

Bardahl and 100% synthetic

Bardahl invests heavily in genuine synthetic technology. A large part of the Bardahl range is true 100% synthetic, built around technologies such as Plasma, Polar Plus and Fullerene C60 for maximum protection and engine cleanliness.

The simple takeaway

Next time you choose an oil, read the label and the technical data sheet rather than only the wording on the front. Check whether the base is PAO/ester and whether it clearly states "100% synthetic" — then choose the oil that genuinely matches your engine. When in doubt, just ask your supplier.
